I've been told that angling is no longer allowed at Woodslea Pond and hasn't been for months.
I don't know why and it is still listed as an angling water on the Wirral Borough Council website.
It will be interesting to see if it is still listed on the 2011 AWAC card.
Woodslea Pond is Closed for reasons unknown.
Arrowe Park, Is not worth fishing due to almost total fish loss LAST YEAR, not yet re stocked
Royden Park, Is closed because of massive fish loss due to neglect in the freezing weather.
Gayton Park Is un fishable due to general neglect.
I think it's fair to say that AWAC have done a truly awful job of looking after the council waters, In my opinion they should have all control of our lakes removed from, pass it on the PSAC who seem to do a fantastic job off looking after the waters they are trusted with.
Thats my opinion anyway, I'm sure we would all like to hear from an AWAC spokesperson if they exist ?
As far as I know Woodslee pond was closed because of the noise, bonfires, litter and general mess that had been left round the pond and was designated part of the wildlife reserve of Brotherton Park last year.
Apparently the local 'anglers', I use that term loosely, were in uproar about this and as, reportedly, a large amount of time had been invested in fish being moved from 'elsewhere' to supplement stocks they were not at all happy. I heard that on appeal to the council the pond had been given back to AWAC and has been fishable again. I don't know how true any of this is.
Yesterday I heard from a mate that Woodslee has suffered a 'substantial' fish kill from the freeze but again I don't know how accurate this is.
Although its listed on the Wirral council website as an AWAC water when i spoke to the ranger last year when looking for a venue to hold our junior match he said it wasnt AWAC and was just free fishing. He was even prepared to partly close the lake just for our juniors to fish it. In the end got a better offer to fish Meols station lake courtesy of Birkenhead Anglers.
Woodslee is now going to go back under AWAC control in the near future(for better or worse) Some pegs have already been upgraded by the ranger. Talk of wanting to remove the pike which i think would be a shame as theres not too many places local kids can get their first encounter with the toothy critters.
Hi haydn sorry for late reply. Wouldnt recommend fishing on your own here as local yobs exist. Plenty of small fish and some good sized carp and lots of pike. As for needing AWAC card if you find a local angling club that is affiliated to AWAC you can join them and fish the AWAC waters. Think junior AWAC card is about £5 for the year. Our club is affiliated to AWAC and is £7 for the year for juniors (this also allows you to fish our club ponds near Brimstage which only contain lots of small silver fish and also our stretches of the River 7--plus our junior match on Damhead lane!!) Other clubs like Port Sunlight, Lairds, Caldy are also affiliated but i dont know how much their junior fees are and if there is a waiting list.
Lairds is easy to join & there's no waiting list. They'll be the cheapest as well. Contact Mal Gillies on 0151 645 3396. The Cattery ponds are local to you (and not bad waters) and you get your AWAC thrown in as well for all the parks.
Yes Steve - there won't be a problem. It used to be advertised regularly in the Wirral News. If he moans...just tell him it was me who gave it out. He can moan at me instead & I'll give him a slap.
do you know exactly where off the wilaston rd the catteries are mate? wanted to go and have a look at them thinking of joining cammell anglers. if you could pin point them on google maps maybe that would be a great help.
