Hi Steve,
Bit like Alan Whicker at the moment arn't you, my next door neighbour is big into match fishing and Weston is one of his favourite venues, he tells me the owner is into his match fishing and won't take any cr-p from anyone, runs a tight ship so to speak. Westons a fair old trek from your end. Surprised you have not gone to Pen y Ffrith yet? or next to Pen Y Ffrith is Gweryd Lakes http://www.gwerydlakes.co.uk/ http://maps.google.co.uk/?ll=53.083379,-3.234701&spn=0.01392,0.05476&t=h&z=15&vpsrc=6 The big lake in the middle is Gweryd Lake, the smaller ones towards the bottom of the link is Pen Y Ffrith Best of luck wherever you end up, I am in work!!, Mon- Thu next week I am in Scotland, then Mon-Thu the following two weeks over to South of France, (Hope to pick up some bits for my new Rive Box) Dave |

steve, if you get the chance, give weston pools a try, it's a lovely place and great fishing, it's a few years since I have fished it, but I would imagine it's still a good water and well looked after.

Eye up, John 83, another insomniac, thought there was only me who got up at stupid 0'clock!
Just come accross this, Re Pen y Ffrith. 18TH MAY 2011 Before I get to the fishing, I it has to be said this fishery is one of the most picturesque and well maintained fishery I have fished in a long time. From the stunning views of the Clwydian range and surrounding area to the bird gardens, wildlife and immaculate grounds. All pegs were hard standing with plenty of room and well spaced apart. The car park is of an ample size with good access to the fishery, with a small drive up to the specimen lake for people with lots of gear for long days and nights. I was fishing with my brother on the day, we fished the match/pleasure water (Pine Lake) on the last two pegs on the left looking from the track, to the left of the large disabled peg. From the first cast to the island my brother was in to a tench even before his feeder had settled. We both fished to the island around ½-1 meter from it, it was only about 2-3 feet deep and as soon as my feeder went in the tip was round for a nice carp about 2 lb. We must have taken about 150lb in tench and carp on the day between us. We fished on triple red maggot, meat and pellet on size 14-16 hooks with a mix of 2-4mm pellet and ground bait in small cage feeders. My brother fished against the island for most of the day, with constant results. I started against the island, and then baited the margins, fishing the top three sections of my pole, which produced good carp as soon as the float went in, after success in the margins I moved out mid water about ten meters on the pole fishing pellet with again instant fish more tench than carp. It did not matter where I fished or at what depth the fishing was excellent. The facilities were great; there was a cafe for hot and cold drinks and toilets available on site. The sat nav does not work due to the location so if you follow the brown signs with ducks on from the village (Llanarmon-Yn-Ial) it will take you strait to the fishery. All in all this is a brilliant fishery with something for everyone. We fished the match/pleasure lake but there is a carp and tench water (spinney) which has the larger fish in it and also a specimen lake for the more serious carp angler. Water Pine Lake. Peg Second to last peg on the left, as you look from the track. Tactics 1: Small cage feeder to the island ½-1 meter from it, hook 14-16 at approx 1 foot from feeder, fishing red maggot meat and pellet, with mixed 2-4mm pellets and ground bait in the feeder. 2: In the margins on the bottom using 6mm pellet on a size 14 hook, feeding 4mm pellets. This can be done on pole of float rod. 3: Fishing about ten meters out on the bottom using 6mm pellets on a size 16 hook feeding 2-4 mm pellets regular. Again this can be done on pole or float rod. Hi John
Yes did go to Weston Pools yesterday with my mate Kev Nice place, very match orientated and not being a match man found the pegs a bit small ( just for boxes ) Started ok with 2 carp about 8 lb then started to slow down with lots of bits also very heavy rain, plus I was not feeling very well I left about 1-30 but Kev stayed and he had a good day topped with a 11 lb 3 oz barbel (weighed ) All in all not bad, one to remember to try again, but a 100 mile round trip. ( Starting to get a bit scruffy with litter, but it is winter ) Steve |
