Royden Park Lake

DaveE
Administrator
I went for a wander around Royden Park with the dog this afternoon.
It was a lovely sunny day and when I got to the lake six people were fishing. None had caught anything.
Two blokes were carp fishing. When I mentioned that there may not be any carp left in the lake due to the big fishkill during the winter they said they didn't know that any fish had died! Talk about finger on the pulse!
I had a good look at the water and saw a few dozen rudd on the surface but nothing else.
It will be interesting to see what is caught here over the summer months.

I fished both yesterday and today (evening) fishing for carp at Royden. No sign of any carp at all and the rud/roach looked stocked?
After fishing here for 18 years now and have never seen the lake so quiet - I really don't think any carp are left after the winter, normally in the corners on both sides they will be in the margins but nothing – even with the sun out.
Talking to some others two people caught in the week, both 4lb commons but nothing of size.
Could be time to complain to AWAC/Council?

I fished there last Sunday with my son, caught loads of silvers, but nothing of any decent size, spoke to one of the wardens when he came around litter picking & checking permits, and he said that there is no intention of re stocking the pond with carp as they brought nothing but problems with people overnighting, leaving beer cans / litter all over the place, and generally doing what ever they felt like leaving a mess. enough said I suppose, once again AWAC not doing they're job and removing these type of people !.

Such a nice lake but the warden was adament that it would never again be known as a carp lake !, not sure what he meant by that but he was not a happy bunny !, he was not impressed by the way his park and lake were being treated by fishermen, wouldn't be surprised if he fished them just to remove them !

My opinion anyway !

Glad they check permits and EA licences awell !

A friend of mine walks his dog around the lake most days and tells me that he has witnessed roach, rudd and the odd crucian carp caught over the last few weeks. (no sign of any common or mirror carp though)
On the downside, lots of litter is being left once again and also someone has snapped lots branches off trees and left them strewn around.

I walked the dog around Royden Park last night.
The lake water is a horrible green colour.
I hope the fish that survived the winter freeze-up aren't now going to suffer due to an algal bloom.
As I've mentioned before, in my opinion all shallow park lakes should have barley straw bales put in them each spring and autumn to prevent such blooms. They only cost a few quid per bale.

Cannot agree more, but as we know nothing will be done.
I don't know why we have AWAC, why don't we just buy the licences from the tackle shops
who sent it to the council or from the libraries etc.

The Council lakes could be really good for the community all over the wirral but they only seem to be looking after birkenhead park and I'm convinced its only because it is more well known for being a prominant public park and historical landmark.

I think they should sell at least some of them off to people who care and will turn them in to good dayticket/season ticket waters. Then the remaining ones will have what little time & money (if any) that is available and can be looked after better.

Royden Park Lake should be Wirral-Fisheries.com lake!

Just a thought

Cheers

Barley straw treatment needs to take place BEFORE there is an algal bloom. It is the rotting process of the bales which suppresses the algae and can prevent it almost entirely.
Bales should be put in a water spring and autumn EVERY year.
It is sometimes of little use putting barley straw in a water which already has an algal bloom and expecting an instant result.
Six bales in a water the size of the Captains Pit is well over the top!

I walked the dog around Royden Park lake this afternoon.
Nobody was fishing.
It is a couple of months since I was there. Two pegs have been refurbished with timber, gravel and paving slabs, which was nice to see.
However, some idiot has already thrown one of the paving slabs into the lake!

It`s good to see A.W.A.C. doing some work on their lakes, but it must be very demoralising for the working party
Maybe better if they just used the gravel.
