Off to Hereford next weekend, hopefully for some barbel. Can't wait.
Other half just bought me a new waterproof? She is after something?

Yes ---- You out the house!  For what reasons--who knows. When my wife encourages me to go out I usually come home to find the wallpaper stripped in a room> Not a bad thing but it means i have to put the new stuff up.

Tight lines and anchor your rod down

Try and keep one hand on the rod at all times when barbel fishing.
Have nearly come to grief in the past, and almost lost rods.
If this wind keeps up I might need it to stop it being blown away.

Just back from a very unproductive 4 days on the Wye.
Water levels down and gin clear.
Only heard of one barbel being caught in the area during my stay.
Was talking to a local who was in practice for a big Wye match, he told me that a 200 peg match the week before had produced no barbel at all.
After giving up on the barbel had a couple of sessions on the stick float for the dace. Very obliging if not monsters.
Watching the guy practising was an education in itself. 7M whip, squatts on the hook feeding small balls of groundbait, fish a chuck. A masterclass, although I don't think I could keep it going for a full match.
Did see some nice pike, up to 16lb come out, but did not have the gear with me. Maybe next time.

Tighter Lines next time Alex. Obviously some skill and mental stamina to keep fish coming all through a match-- not my cup of tea but weve all had those days when just for the sheer fun of it we want to see how many bits we can catch. Its just so nice to see a red/orange float tip keep slipping beneath the surface. In winter I always have a day on a club pond which only has perch in and can guarentee 30 or more of them in a couple of hours-- i like to see it as a fish stock taking exercise. Pity they dont seem to be getting any bigger over the years
