the brick works aint bad for the carp but abit slow at the moment. every year i go and to two days on a place out in stafford called baden hall the lake record is just short of 40 have a look on the website and it shows every fish caught and what bait its abit of a way out but worth it for a couple of days and you pass stapely water gardens on the way to get bait ect. last time we went we five fish between to of us the biggest being 241b 13 oz the smallest 171b well worth a look

theres no where on the wirral you really need carp gear we just dont have a true specimen water, even an avon rod will give you better sport on wirral waters if your after the bigger carp, you need to get out to cheshire and join a club like warrington or sotas, the wirral is just not an area for specimen carp. you could land any carp round here on a feeder rod.

Getting back to AWAC waters.......don't bother with Gayton Playing Fields Pond. It hasn't been managed for years and so has become completely weeded up. Pity as there are some decent fish in it.
Poulton Recreation Ground Pond is worth a trip but is only small so get there early to get a peg. If it is full go to Woodslea Pond in Brotherton Park. Central Park in Wallasey used to have some good fish in it years ago but was always plagued by unruly kids. I've not heard anyone mention it recently. As mentioned earlier, Arrowe Park Lake was polluted last year and has not been restocked. I don't know if there are any plans to bother. Both the lakes in Birkenhead Park are worth trying. Nothing big in them yet because they were only dredged and restocked around 18 months ago. |

Welcome DaveE
Nice to have some info on Gayton, Brotherton Park and Poulton I have never fished any of them and only found out they existed when making this website It`s a pity the council don`t look after fisheries for the kids to use, I`m sure it wouldn`t cost much As for Central Park Wallasey, it was drained and cleaned out a few years back but I don`t think many fish where returned. I think a lot of people stay away from the Birkenhead Parks because of the idiots around the area Steve |

used to fish the poulton pond around 10 years ago, pole up against the stick ups for the carp, might give there a try for old times sake soon.

A bit of info about Royden Park Lake.........
Royden Park Lake has been plagued by bad behaviour and litter which has been getting worse recently. Perhaps because of this the Park Rangers recently attended the lake along with an Environment Agency Bailiff and Police officers. There were several young blokes fishing (8 or 9 I think). Only one of them had an EA licence so all the others were booked. The one who had a licence didn't have it with him and was particularly abusive. His details were checked by the EA bailiff who confirmed that he did indeed hold a licence. However, the Police checked his details and discovered that there was a warrant outstanding for another matter so he was arrested! Just about sums up the sort of characters who fish our public waters. |
|
Royden Park is such a lovely water to fish, quiet and relaxing. That was until a couple of months ago when all of a sudden it seemed to be overun by the sort of people you would cross the road to avoid. While this water was always popular and attracted quite a few young people who wanted to catch the carp there, everyone was always respectful to each other and seemed to get along with the other anglers that fished there.
The last few times I fished there however it was awful, litter everywhere, gangs of people fishing shoutung to each other, swearing, sharings nets, no mats, hooking ducks etc. It was thtat bad I packed up and havent been back since. Hopefully now these people have been caught by the EA word might get around and the water might return to its peacefull haven it was in the past. I have been fishing Moreton Mere (Brickworks) for the past six weeks, only £40 a year and the guys that run it are great. There is always someone there to keep an eye on the place and they dont take any nonsense there. Can be a tricky water to fish but there are some cracking carp there and some of the bream are just huge. Well worth the money for such a good water when you consider most places now charge £7 a day to fish them which soons add up if your going out a couple of times a week. |

Paul_B,
I haven't been to Moreton Brickworks for years because it used to be plagued by idiots from the estate just the other side of the railway line. On occasions lads would be firing air rifles at wildfowl and the pellets would be bouncing off the water and just missing me and other anglers. The place could never be described as pretty but the final straw came when lorries began arriving and dumping rubble. I've never been back. It used to be fine when it was a 14 acre flooded brickpit. It didn't contain many fish in those days but some of them were crackers. |
|
Wow sounds so different from how it is run now, maybe I have just been lucky during these past few weeks but since I joined I have seen no trouble there at all. The guys that run it seem to be very in control and I cant imagine anyone wanting to cross them. saying that though I only really fish it throughout the week and it is very quiet then. The one weekend that I did fish there it was very busy but not unruly in anyway. The brick pit next door to it has now closed down so you dont get any lorries or anything down there.
I do remember it years ago when I was a kid and the lake was huge before the brickworks opened, I use to fish for the perch there and use to pull some big ones out. I would suggest you give it try again one day Im sure you would find it a different place than what you remember, I agree that you couldnt describe the place as pretty but it does seem a lot of work has gone on there it has nice decent sized pegs wich are well spread out , not to busy, and some cracking fish coming out at the moment. |

Ive fished Poulton Recreational Grounds on a few occasions and there seemed to be a few big fish in there but the last couple of times ive been to look at it, it seems lifeless. All the long reeds in the middle are gone too. I heard roumors it was dredged and all the fish were taken elsewhere? Anyone confirm this?

I've not heard anything about Poulton Playing Field Pond.....but isn't that the point?
Why don't AWAC have a website? Or at the very least a newsletter which could be left at local tackle shops? I've no doubt that AWAC carry out some good work but why aren't they publicising this? (yes I've seen the odd mention of AWAC in the Birkenhead Park Newsletter but why haven't they got their own newsletter telling us all about how they spend the income from £10 AWAC annual cards?) My main gripe about AWAC is that they are an invisible mystery organisation. Come on AWAC.........late's hear what is happening following the pollution at Arrowe Park? What are your plans for the management of Birkenhead Park Lakes? Why has Gayton Recreation Field pond been left to deteriorate? etc etc......... |
|
Well said Dave, I couldnt agree with you more. When I bought my AWAC permit this year I was ticket number 384 and this was just what was sold from one tackle shop. I dont know how many tickets are being sold accross the Wirral, but it must be quite a lot and I really cant see where the money is going. I am sure a bit of work goes on behind the scenes, but how much would it cost to get a website up and running as a point of reference for members to refer to.
I only started fishing again last season so my son could start getting into the sport and quite frankly the state of the some of the waters is shocking. Arrowe Park was a bit of a mess last year with old and worn pegs, trees that has fallen in the water, rubbish everywhere etc, then they had the pollution in the water and I havent been back since. Central park is a no go area while the kids are off and is also quite messy. Took a visit down to Gayton fields last year and could only laugh at the state of the pond, it is totally unfishable and looks like it has been in that state for at least a few years. Birkenhead Park lakes are now very nice and you can see what work has been carried out there, but it seems all the other waters have been left to go to ruin. So yes can somone from AWAC please let us know what is going on with these waters, what are the plans for fish stocks? refurbishments? new waters etc. Thanks |

Thanks Paul.
This is the only thing I can find, it is on the Wirral Borough Council website:- There are a number of public fishing waters in Wirral. To use them, you need to purchase an Environment Agency Rod License (from any Post Offices) and an Association of Wirral Angling Clubs Day Ticket (obtainable from most angling shops). Fishing Facilities Arrowe Country Park (Junior Anglers to be accompanied by an adult) Birkenhead Lower Park Lake Birkenhead Upper Park Lake (Match fishing only) Brotherton Park, Bromborough Captain's Pit, Hose Side Road, Wallasey Central Park, Wallasey Gayton Playing Fields, Heswall Poulton Recreation Ground, Bebington Royden Park (Seniors only) All lakes are managed by the Association of Wirral Angling Clubs. Contact Mr Malcolm Gillies 17 Rockville Street Rock Ferry Wirral CH42 3XY Tel: 0151 645 3396 I wonder where all the £10's go to? Wirral Borough Council or AWAC? Are any accounts published? |
